ALL ABOUT SAILING IN GREECE - WEATHER CONDITIONS-TIPS & HINTS

MELTEMI WIND & MAIN CHARACTERISTICS (ALL THESE WILL BE EXPLAINED THOROUGHLY AND IN DETAIL TO YOU BEFORE DEPARTURING FROM PORT)

When you charter a yacht in Greece in summer, the prevailing wind you will sail with is the "meltemi". Main characteristics of meltemi wind are:

1) Meltemi is a wind blowing mainly from North, North West and North East direction.

2) It is a "steady" wind, you will not face any variations in the tension or direction of the wind while sailing. For example if you departure from Samos Island to visit Arki Island and the meltemi is blowing with 5-6 beaufort you will not have to worry if it will get stronger.

3)It starts blowing stronger from 12.00p.m. until 18.00p.m.

4) Meltemi always blows stronger in the Cyclades area than the Dodecanesse and Samos Area.

TIPS & HINTS ON SAILING & ANCHORING IN AEGEAN SEA (ALL THESE WILL BE EXPLAINED THOROUGHLY AND IN DETAIL TO YOU BEFORE DEPARTURING FROM PORT)

I) When sailing close to land (2 miles away and closer) always keep small sails out, due to sudden strong winds produced by ant pressure of wind passing over land and mountains.

II) Prefer to reach your next destination until 13.00p.m. as you will always find a great spot to anchor on beach or port and will avoid any strong meltemi wind.(Meltemi starts blowing from 12.00p.m. until 18.00p.m.)

III) When strong meltemi blows be sure to moor at the port you are visiting until 16.30p.m. as all sailors want to find a secure place for night.

IV) Be sure when you anchor on beaches to throw your anchor while your bow if facing the direction of the wind [e.x. when wind is blowing from North direction, you must place your bow facing North, drop the anchor and (preferably in sandy or rocky bottom)] then be sure to release at least 4 times the length of yacht in chain and prefer to drop your anchor at a depth of 6 to 8 meters . For a 49ft Yacht this is 49 x 4 =   196ft (60 meters) AT LEAST!

ALL OF SAMOS YACHTS HAVE FROM 80 TO 100 METERS CHAIN AND ALL YACHTS HAVE FROM 20 to 22kg DELTA ANCHORS
